  Research Notes:

These notes might clarify some difficulties in researching Robert Gold and his wives and descendants.

We found 4 children in the OPR with only the father's name, and an earlier child (Alex) from his death record. Some Civil death records (Alex and James) show the mother to be Isabel Irons and we assume all 5 had the same mother.

We found 4 children in the OPR with both father's and mother's names, Robert Gold and Isabel Irons.

We found 1 OPR birth and 3 other children in 1841 Census, all male, born to Robert Gold and Isabel Mathers.

Robert Gold and Isabel Irons had 3 daughters. Jean (b.1815), Janet (b.1820), Mary (b.1822). We think that only Janet married.

- Jean is in the 1851 Census as Jane, age 35, working for her brother James at Shearstripes.

- Mary died, single, in 1860 and the informant was brother-in-law William Sprunt.

- We think that Janet changed to Jess/Jessie. She married William Sprant in 1840 as Jess and had 3 children in 1843, 1845, 1849. In the 1841 Census they were Sprunt. When she died in 1876 she was Jessie Sprunt, wife of William Sprunt, informant was son Charles Sprunt.

A difficulty appeared in the 1851 Census - Robert Gold (age 67) and Isabel Mathers (age 48) have Robert Herald (age 5) with them. The youngster is recorded as "GrandSon".

Robert Herald's parents are James Herald and Jessie Gold and they married in 1851 and had at least 2 more children after they married. If Robert Herald is the grandson of Robert Gold and Isabel Mathers, Jessie has to be a daughter of Robert Gold (and Isabel Irons). But none of Jean, Janet/Jessie, Mary fit the bill.

We think that Jessie Gold/Herald was born in 1827 and is the daughter of Alexander Gold and Jean Kinloch. Alexander (b.1783) is a cousin of Robert Gold and is the same age. They possibly grew up together and knew each other well. So, young Robert Herald is old Robert's cousin twice removed, or maybe "my cousin's GrandSon".

If the latter was said to the census enumerator, they perhaps mis-heard or there was not enough room on the form and it was shortened to GrandSon.

However, there are two other Alexander Golds around this time in the neighbouring parish of Lethnot. We have chosen to include those from Edzell, but it cannot be proved rigorously.
